The Role of Instrumental Senior Staff

(Brass, Woodwind, Strings, Guitar, Percussion, Voice and Piano) The SIM instrumental senior staff have two main roles:
  1. To provide educational leadership, support and administrative supervision for teachers in their instrumental group;
  2. To participate in the planning and execution of SIM activity, actively promoting the educational policies and strategies of the Office of Government Schools and SIM to instrumental teachers, school-based administrators and staff and the general community.
In addition to the above, their particular duties are in the areas of:
Leadership
  • Providing leadership on matters specifically relating to the quality of teaching in their instrumental area
  • Monitoring the quality of instruction in schools
Advice to SIM Advising the Principal (SIM) on the management of resources, including suitable staff deployment, instrument stocks and Resource Centre materials
Administration Overseeing administrative and organisational requirements are met by the due dates: e.g. the submission of timetables, class/stock sheets, travel claims
Professional support to teachers Coordinating:
  • temporary teacher appraisal
  • performance management
  • professional development and support
for the teachers in their section

SIM has a limited number of senior staff positions available. The current configuration of staff positions is an attempt to meet all the needs of our organisation as effectively as possible. This configuration can change as the needs of SIM change.

Some instrument sections have more staff than others. All instrument groups have different needs and issues. The SIM structure attempts to reflect this by strategies such as
  • grouping of teachers together (e.g.; percussion, voice and piano)
  • the use of additional SRA positions to support Program Coordinators of woodwind, guitar, brass and strings.
